Narrative and photographs

Four years ago, when we first held our annual Death Hike at Hickory Run State Park, it was so cold and pouring so heavily that I didn’t even bother to search for this mark, even though I knew it was close to the visitors center. This year, it was raining yet again, but it was slightly warmer. And we had a bit of extra time.

We pulled off Route 534 around 41.025752, -75.689865, crossed over and walked the short distance down to the coordinates for 76 C. The obvious ledge I had seen on the Street View was indeed obvious, but there was no mark to be found on its exposed section. Ken, Gina, and I soon realized that the entire area was a huge outcropping ledge, covered with dried pine needles. It is easy enough to clear off, but despite our efforts at the time, we weren’t able to uncover the mark.

We were still searching when we got a text message from Rob saying that he was at the visitors center waiting for us, so we wrapped up the search for today. I will be back! There is every reason for me to think that the mark is still in place, and a metal detector should pinpoint it easily.
